Have you heard the saying no time like the present? No truer words were ever spoken. What goals, dreams, and plans do you still excuse away because of no time, no money, or no motivation? Do you allow the relentlessly negative news about the stock market, gas prices, house values, and the impending presidential election to contribute to your sleepy rut of procrastination? What are you waiting for? There’s no time like the present!
There may always be some conflict or controversy in the world; family dramas will probably continue with or without you; and I guarantee that clocks and calendars will always move slowly with drudgery, and pass lightening fast when passion is involved. So WAKE UP, there is no perfect time.
In previous posts, I have discussed taking baby steps to end procrastination and achieve a goal. I have presented the concepts of planning, list making, enlisting support of those around you, etc. These are all useful tools. But today I’m addressing something bigger. I hear so often, almost daily, from clients, friends and acquaintances that they are unhappy with whom, what, where, and how they ARE. Often they suffer in silence for years, trying to make their square shaped life fit in the round hole of who they really are. They feel certain that life leads us, that we have no control. “I can’t really be that person because yada yada yada (excuses)!” But we do have control. YOU have control.
This is not how it has to be. All around you are examples of people who started life with huge environmental, emotional, or physical obstacles and persevered until they overcame those challenges and achieved their dreams. Almost nothing is impossible these days – if you want it badly enough. I say almost, because we do have to work within the laws of reality. As an example: a 60 year old woman may not be able to become an astronaut, but she could still fly to space (as a civilian for about $40,000) if that were truly her dream. (A real dream goal of one of my clients!)
What are you waiting for? How difficult is it, really, to turn a dream into reality? Depends on the dream, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Are you really too tired, too scared, or too undisciplined to commit to a plan of action and follow through with it? Keep in mind, planning is not enough. You must have momentum. John Lennon said “life is what happens while you’re busy making plans.” Do you want to look back when you are 80 and feel you didn’t do enough with your life, you wasted your potential, because you made plans but never took action? Stop waiting, do something.
Without true conviction and desire, nothing is going to change for you. An epiphany doesn’t always strike those who simply sit and wait for it. Most cigarette smokers know the risks and health issues associated with their addition, but until they are ready to stop, no amount of family pressure or pleading will change that behavior. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink!
Here’s an analogy that works for many. Picture your life as a garden waiting to be designed and planted by YOU. Visualize yourself living the lifestyle you dream of (the garden), and behaving as that person you feel is hiding inside. Be specific in your design. What are the colors, sights, sounds, smells of this garden (your new life)? Once a solid image is achieved, then it is time to do the labor. Undoubtedly, this is the point where you previously stopped pursuing your goals. Manual labor (and I’m not talking ditch digging) is a huge deterrent in our lazy, “have machines do it for you,” 21st Century society.
But imagine the results at the end of one year, if each day you took one positive, proactive step out of the dry hard life you currently reside in, and into a new fruitful life (garden). Where would you be? Remember, this moment is just a pebble on the road – life is long – yet it goes by in a flash. Don’t waste time. Prep the soil, plant the seeds, give it some water, and a new life starts to grow.
Make a choice right now: live the life you dream, or keep waiting for something to happen. I say – what are you waiting for?
